Configuring
To use the CommuniGate FC-gateway you should configure the FirstClass
BBS, the CommuniGate Server and the gateway application itself.
Configuring the FirstClass BBS
- Step F1: Stop the FirstClass BBS and use the
FirstClass® Tools application (its Configure->Server Name command)
to set the Site Name. The Site name may contain ONLY Latin letters, digits
and the "." (dot), "-" (minus), and
"_" (underscore) symbols. Note this name and the Server
Network name (usually it's "FirstClass"). Restart the FirstClass
Server application.
- Step F2: Log in as the Administrator.
- Step F3: Create a Gateway and name it CommuniGate.
- Step F4: Use a numeric string as the user ID.
According to the FirstClass manuals, 2000500099 is one of recommended values.
Enter (and write down) a password for this Gateway.
Configuring the CommuniGate System
- Step C1: Log in as the Postmaster.
- Step C2: Create a CommuniGate User (account)
and name it FirstClass.
- Step C3: In the CommuniGate Router setting,
enter the line:
sitename = <Local>FirstClass
where sitename is the Site name (not the Network Name) of your FirstClass
server (set in the Step F1).
Configuring the CommuniGate FC-gateway
- Step G1: Launch the CommuniGate FC-gateway application and choose
Settings from the File menu. The FC-gateway Settings dialog box appears.

In the FirstClass Settings section:
- Step G2: Enter the FirstClass Server network name and the zone
name set in the Step F1 (if the gateway connects to the
FirstClass Server using the AppleTalk), or
- Step G2 ': Enter the FirstClass Server IP address or Internet
host name and the port number (if the gateway connects to the FirstClass
Server using the TCP/IP protocol)
- Step G3: Enter the Gateway user ID (2000500099) and the password
(set in the Step F4)
- Step G4: Enter the Gateway name (set in the Step
F3).
In the CommuniGate Settings section:
- Step G5: Enter the name of the CommuniGate account (set in the
Step C2).
In the CommuniGate->FirstClass Settings section:
- Step G6: Specify the symbol or simbols that
the Gateway will replace with spaces when converting user names received
from the Internet. For example, if the underscore ("_") symbol
is selected, and all mail to the fc.cgate.com domain should go to the BBS
system via the FC_gateway, the address John_Smith@fc.cgate.com
will be converted into the John Smith BBS user name. See the Step G9 .
Note: the gateway does not convert the symbol if it is the last
symbol in the name, or if the symbol is followed with the same symbol.
For example, if the dot (".") symbols should be replaced with
spaces to form BBS user names, the address Mark..J..Jones.@fc.cgate.com
will be converted into the Mark. J. Jones. username.
- Step G7: The RFC Headers option allows you to specify how the
gateway should process the RFC822 (Internet) message headers: they can
be discarded, they can be added to the end of the message body, or these
headers can be added as attachments to the messages submitted to the FirstClass
network.
- Step G8: You can limit size of message body text. Messages with
body sizes greater than that value will be submitted to the FirstClass
server as attachments.
In the FirstClass->CommuniGate Settings section:
- Step G9: Specify the symbol that the Gateway
will substitute for spaces when converting BBS user names into Internet
addresses. For example, if the underscore ("_") symbol is selected,
and the fc.cgate.com it the BBS domain, the BBS user name John Smith
will be converted into the Internet address John_Smith@fc.cgate.com.
See the Step G6.
Note: space converting takes place before the Reverse-Routing
method is applied.
- Step G10: Select the default MIME mode for messages received
from the FirstClass network and forwarded to the Internet. While the quoted-printable
mode is the most advanced one, some mailers (especially the Japanese versions)
do not process messages in the quoted-printable form correctly, so you
may want to select the 8bit method.
- Step G11: Select the Consider BBS users Local option if you
want all CommuniGate modules to process messages from FirstClass BBS without
restrictions. For example: if this option is not selected, the CommuniGate
Fax module will not send messages from FirstClass users to long-distance
numbers if the Fax module settings allow non-local users to make calls
only inside the Server area code.
- Step G12: You can turn the "Accept TCP Connection Requests" option on and enter a TCP port number, if you want the FirstClass server
to initiate gateway sessions. Please consult your FirstClass manuals on
configuring server-initiated gateways.
- Step G13: Select the default attachment encoding method for
messages received from the FirstClass network and forwarded to the Internet.
Other settings:
- Step G14: Specify how often you want the gateway to exchange
messages between the systems (the Start Session Each xxx minutes option).
- Step G15: select the Hide Log in Background option if you do
not want to keep the CommuniGate FC-gateway Log window open while the gateway
is running in the background.
